Different with the Same Goal: Introductory Mentor Training in Tuzla

The Foundation for the Support and Development of Mentoring Programs "Older Brother, Older Sister" continues its work by expanding its network of volunteers and further implementing mentoring programs. In this context, the first introductory training of this cycle was held in Tuzla, within the Informal Group, in December. The two-day training was led by coordinator Medina Gračić and attended by five new volunteers.

Although many assume that the "Older Brother, Older Sister" Program is primarily intended for students of pedagogical fields, the introductory training in Tuzla demonstrated that this program is open to everyone, regardless of their professional background. Coordinator Medina Gračić emphasized: "No matter which sector we come from, what matters most is that we know how to listen to children, recognize their needs, and take appropriate steps based on that."

During the training, volunteers had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with various workshops designed to help them develop the skills needed to work with children and families. Through practical exercises, they learned how to explore their own boundaries and reactions in specific situations. Additionally, the training covered administrative procedures, such as volunteer rights and responsibilities, meeting deadlines, and keeping records.

Coordinator Medina also eased the fears and uncertainties of the new volunteers, especially those concerned about their lack of experience working with children. Volunteer Una Ukejnović shared her experience: "Medina mentioned a girl who studied at a technical faculty and managed to connect with a child through empathy and by listening to their wishes. That encouraged me, as I realized that what matters most is having empathy and dedicating your time to the child."

The training not only provided new knowledge but also built mutual connections and trust among the volunteers. Eldin Alibašić, one of the new volunteers, stated: "The training was both useful and fun, and the coordinator was excellent. I’m glad to know she’s always there for us, and I look forward to our future work."

The "Older Brother, Older Sister" Program proves that diversity is its strength. Regardless of personal differences, professional backgrounds, life circumstances, or personalities, each volunteer contributes unique value to the program. As coordinator Medina Gračić explains, the goal of the program is not only to empower children but also to ensure that, by the end of the project, every child can say they were happy, and that their days and months became brighter and more fulfilling. To achieve this goal, all that is needed is time, patience, empathy, and a willingness to listen. Different, yet united, we can create a beautiful and successful story that will positively impact the lives of both children and mentors.
